Hello folks,
Last week I went for the first time to the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival in Moscow, Idaho, in their 57th annual edition. It was an amazing event. In the same night I got to play a couple of my big band arrangements with a fine jazz orchestra led by Vern Sielert, play Gnawa music with the amazing Morroccan gimbri player Samir Langus and also play some Brazilian forró with an ensemble led by Navir Chattri from Nepal. Read that again… yes, all that music on the same stage, with a couple of thousand music students from all the US and Canada cheering. It’s very inspiring to share such diverse music with such a diverse audience. I also gave 2 workshops to packed rooms, with great questions from teachers and students.
This week I will be i Port Townsend, WA teaching at the Centrum Choro Workshop.
This workshop has been happening for the past several years, with an amazing faculty and lots of jams centered around the beautiful language of Choro music. Here’s a clip from 2015:
