The Mystery of Samba

My new class starts this Tuesday

Hey folks,

I am writing this as a last call for anyone who might be interested in learning more about one of the most powerful cultural manifestations in the world: Samba. Much more than just a "Brazilian rhythm", samba is a survival mechanism created by an entire part of Brazilian society that was excluded from social changes and urban development. It has somehow managed to live and to thrive today in spite of all  prejudices and efforts to erase it and its creators.

In my new class The Mystery of Samba we will learn about how the power of samba resides in its diversity and integration of very different human and musical ingredients, creating a cultural manifestation that resists all attempts to efface and to commercialize it.

Of course, we will also listen to more than a century of recorded music  as examples of the crucial transformations that shape the culture of samba.

We'll talk about the musical, cultural, political and societal aspects of this manifestation which is one of the strongest fruits of human miscegenation in our planet.

The first session for this class starts this Tuesday, October 22 from 6:30 to 8:30PM (Pacific). The second session will happen on Tuesday October 29 at the same time.

Even if you cannot attend the live Zoom event, it will be recorded and all registered participants will have access to the archived video, audio, chat and playlists.
