Today, January 25, Antonio Carlos Jobim (or Tom, as we call him in Brazil) would be 97 years old. In 2015 we celebrated his birthday with a special concert at Seattle’s The Triple Door featuring my Quinteto (with Ben Thomas on vibraphone and bandoneon, Chuck Deardorf on bass, Mark Ivester on drums and Jeff Busch on percussion), plus special guests Romero Lubambo on guitar and vocalist Maúcha Adnet. The concert was recorded unbeknownst to us, and eventually it was released on Adventure Music in 2018. You can purchase a signed CD on my website or download it as high-definition audio on Bandcamp.
Today I am sharing our version of Tom Jobim’s beautiful Surfboard, which he composed as a tribute to his friend and colleague Roberto Menescal, who was the first one to record it.
I hope you will enjoy this. Let’s celebrate the birth of one of the greatest composers of the world. Feliz aniversário, Tom!
